Providing Work Incentive
Counseling to Promote Employment Among Persons with Mental Illness
Effective March 2010, AHEDD has initiated a
contract with the Allegheny County Department of Human Services Office of Behavioral
Health. This award will allow AHEDD
to provide work incentive counseling with a focus on consumers of the
Office of Behavioral Health who receive benefits from the Social Security
Administration (SSA) and are working or preparing to become employed. This initiative is part of the
County’s strategic plan for recovery-oriented systems transformation
to help address consumer’s basic needs for housing, employment and
transportation.
Since 2001, AHEDD has provided Work Incentive
Planning Assistance through a cooperative agreement with SSA. This initiative involves individualized
work incentive counseling to SSA beneficiaries with disabilities who are
working or preparing for employment. According to Joy Smith, AHEDD’s Work
Incentive Counseling Program Manager, this service is an excellent
complement to the supported employment initiatives of the Allegheny County
Office of Behavioral Health.
AHEDD is a private, non-profit agency with a
mission to serve the community as a catalyst in the employment and
development of persons with disabilities.
Established in 1977, AHEDD serves the community by collaborating with
business and people with disabilities through a field office network
throughout Pennsylvania and Delaware.
